๐ RP L1 T2: Models of Relapse
The study of relapse encompasses various models, each providing distinct lenses through which to understand the recurrence of symptoms or problematic behaviours.. Let us go through the three models
Interaction between โhigh riskโ (for substance use) and the individualโs self-efficacy to cope with those situations without substance use determines relapse
Describes addiction as a chronic, relapsing disease. It asserts that while the initiation of substance use may be a voluntary choice, ongoing use brings about significant alterations in the brain, resulting in a loss of control over drug consumption..
Combines elements from both cognitive and disease perspectives, recognizing the intricate interplay between cognitive, biological, and psychosocial factors in shaping relapse dynamics.
The Cognitive-Behavioral Model of relapse
Twenty-five years ago, Marlatt (1978) obtained qualitative information from 70 male alcoholics regarding the primary situations that led them to initiate drinking during the first 90 days following inpatient treatment. On the basis of their responses, Marlatt (1985) proposed a cognitive-behavioral model of the relapse process.(slide no 4 has the graphical presentation of the Cognitive behavioral model of relapse.

Before we go to the next Lesson on Factors that contribute to Relapse, it is important to think about “words” that we use to discuss relapse prevention with our people. Sometimes, the “Relapse Prevention” term itself is stigmatizing and may reflect a loss of control. Hence
- Invite the person to talk about his or her plan, which is meaningful to him or her
- Judicious use of words that are non-stigmatizing and more empowering
- Ask them what name they want to give the plan.
